Ride Legally & Safely in Vietnam

Do traffic police in Hoi An and Da Nang check licenses?

Yes. Traffic checks are common, especially during peak tourist seasons, and they occur more frequently in Da Nang, particularly around popular attractions along the coastal roads such as the Marble Mountains, Monkey Mountain, and My Khe Beach. Riding legally helps you avoid fines, unnecessary complications, and ensures a smooth, stress-free trip.

What are the requirements for legal riding in Vietnam for foreigners?

For foreign riders, legal riding in Vietnam depends on the type of vehicle. Motorbikes or scooters over 50cc require either a Vietnamese driving license or a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention, together with your home country license. Vehicles that do not require a license - such as 50cc scooters and electric bikes under 4kW with a top speed below 50 km/h - can be ridden legally without an IDP convention 1968.

What are the risks of riding illegally in Hoi An or Da Nang?

Riding illegally in Vietnam can lead to serious consequences. You may face heavy fines (around 2–3 million VND), and traffic police can stop you from continuing your trip, forcing you to take a taxi back and arrange bike pickup with the rental company. In the event of an accident, an illegal rider is generally considered at fault by default, even if you believe the other party caused the accident. This can result in significant legal and financial liabilities, especially in serious cases. Insurance policies typically do not cover any incidents involving illegal riding, and these issues can quickly turn a relaxing holiday into a stressful experience.

Can I use my home country license?

No. Vietnam does not recognize foreign driving licenses on their own. To ride motorbikes over 50cc, you must have a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention, together with your home country driving license.

Is an IDP 1949 valid in Vietnam?

No. Vietnam only recognizes the International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention. IDP 1949 is not valid in Vietnam; however, 50cc scooters and low-power electric bikes can be ridden legally without any IDP.

How can I get an IDP 1968?

An IDP under the 1968 Vienna Convention must be obtained in your home country before traveling and cannot be issued after you leave. Not all countries participate in this convention. Travelers from countries such as the Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, Ireland... are therefore not eligible to legally ride motorbikes over 50cc in Vietnam.

Is it legal to ride your bikes in Vietnam without an IDP 1968?

Yes. Our 50cc scooters, electric bikes, and pedal-assist bikes are fully legal to ride in Vietnam without an International Driving Permit under the 1968 convention. Vietnam only recognizes the 1968 IDP for larger motorcycles. Vehicles under 50cc and electric bikes do not require a Vietnamese motorbike license or IDP 1968, which makes Hoi An eBike a safe and legal choice for most international travelers.

Our Bikes, Services & Pricing

What types of bikes do you offer?

We offer 50cc scooters, electric bikes, and pedal-assist bikes to suit different riding styles. The 50cc scooters are ideal for couples and longer exploration routes. Electric bikes provide a smooth, quiet, and eco-friendly experience. Pedal-assist bikes are perfect for relaxed scenic rides through the countryside.

Is a 50cc scooter powerful enough for two adults?

Yes. Our 50cc scooters are carefully selected to be strong enough for two adults and suitable for most attractions around Hoi An. They perform well on routes to My Son Sactuary, Ba Na Hills, Lady Buddha Pagoda at Monkey Mountain, The Marble Mountains, Da Nang Beaches, countryside roads, and surrounding areas. While they are not designed for steep mountain terrain, they are more than sufficient for typical Hoi An and Da Nang exploration.

Do you offer bike insurance?

Yes. We provide an optional daily insurance package for 50,000 VND per day (approximately 2 USD) that covers damage and loss. This allows you to ride with peace of mind and avoid unexpected repair costs, and many guests choose this option to enjoy a completely stress-free experience.

Do you provide free delivery and pickup?

es. We offer free delivery and pickup within Hoi An, so you can receive the bike directly at your hotel or homestay and return it the same way, making the rental process convenient and smooth. If your accommodation is located outside Hoi An, we can still arrange delivery and pickup with an additional fee ranging from 70,000 to 250,000 VND per bike, depending on the distance and location.

What accessories are included?

All rentals include high-quality helmets that are clean and well-maintained, rain ponchos for unexpected weather, phone holders for easy navigation, and basic first aid kits. We prioritize both safety and comfort to ensure a reliable riding experience.

I don’t have much riding experience. Is it suitable for beginners?

Yes. Our electric bikes and 50cc scooters are beginner-friendly and easy to control, and before you ride we provide a clear explanation, basic guidance, and helpful local road tips specific to Hoi An. Most guests feel comfortable after a short introduction. If you have absolutely no experience and would like to learn properly before exploring on your own, we offer a Scooter Riding Lesson at 200,000 VND per person, where you can practice balance, throttle control, braking, turning, and basic traffic awareness in a safe environment to build real confidence for riding in Hoi An and beyond.

How far can I explore with your bikes?

With our 50cc scooters and electric bikes, you can comfortably explore most attractions around Hoi An, including the Old Town, beaches around Hoi An, the countryside at Cam Kim Island, Tra Que Vegetable Village, and Cam Thanh Nipa Palm Forest. For longer day trips, you can even ride as far as My Son Sanctuary, Ba Na Hills, Lady Buddha Pagoda at Monkey Mountain, and the Marble Mountains. For typical sightseeing routes around Hoi An and nearby areas, one full battery charge or one fuel tank is sufficient to enjoy a full day of exploration with confidence.

Do you offer helmets?

Yes. We do not simply provide helmets, we provide high-quality helmets because your safety is our priority. A proper helmet can make a critical difference in the event of an accident, which is why we only offer reliable, well-maintained helmets that meet safety standards. Each bike includes two helmets as standard. When we deliver your bike, we usually bring three to four different sizes so you can try them on and choose the two that fit you best for maximum comfort and protection.

Do you provide a phone holder for navigation?

Yes. Every bike comes with a secure phone holder so you can easily use Google Maps or other navigation apps while riding. This makes your journey much more convenient and significantly safer, as you can keep both hands on the handlebars and your eyes focused on the road. Without a phone holder, the passenger often has to hold the phone by hand to check directions, which is uncomfortable, distracting, and takes away from the enjoyment of the ride. With a proper mount, navigation becomes smooth and stress-free, allowing you to fully enjoy the scenery around Hoi An.

Do you offer bikes for kids?

Yes. We offer a pedal-assist bike suitable for children, which is an electric-assisted bicycle designed to be easy and safe to control. It has a travel range of up to 60 km and a maximum speed of 30 km/h. This type of bike is commonly used by secondary school students in Vietnam (typically 11–15 years old), making it a familiar and practical option. With a variety of bike types available, Hoi An eBike makes it easy for families to explore together, allowing children to ride a suitable bike alongside their parents while discovering Hoi An.

What if I book for 7 days but only use the bike for 3 days?

No problem. You only pay for the actual number of days you use the bike. If you book for 7 days but ride for 3 days, Hoi An eBike will charge you for 3 days only - not the full 7 days originally booked. We keep it fair and flexible for your travel plans.
