Hoi An eBike was founded by Minh (Mike), a local IT engineer born and raised in Hoi An with a deep love for his hometown. Almost 10 years ago, Minh started Hoi An Bike Rental and Hoi An Motorbike & Scooter Rental, two trusted rental services that have since received over 3,000 five-star reviews on Google and TripAdvisor (as of February 2026). Through years of working closely with international travelers, Minh gained a clear understanding of what visitors truly need to explore Hoi An safely and confidently.

Minh recognized that legal licensing requirements are a major challenge for many foreign travelers visiting Vietnam. In particular, riding common 110cc, 125cc and 160cc scooters legally requires an International Driving Permit under the 1968 Vienna Convention (IDP 1968), which many visitors do not have. This insight led him to create Hoi An eBike - a rental service built around experience first, legality always. Why Legal Riding Matters

In Vietnam, many foreign travelers unknowingly ride scooters without proper legal licensing (IDP 1968 for motorbike over 50cc), which can lead to fines, bike confiscation, or uninsured accidents. Hoi An eBike was created to remove this risk by offering 50cc scooters and electric bikes that foreign travelers can legally ride.

Vietnam recognizes International Driving Permits issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention.
However, travelers from countries such as Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Iceland, Cyprus, Cambodia, Laos, and Malaysia are typically issued IDPs under the 1949 Convention, which are not valid for riding motorbikes in Vietnam.

As a result, even with an IDP, riding motorbikes over 50cc may still be considered illegal in Vietnam for travelers from these countries.
