Do traffic police in Hoi An and Da Nang check licenses?

Yes. Traffic checks are common, especially during peak tourist seasons and more frequently in Da Nang. Riding legally helps you avoid fines and enjoy a stress-free trip.

What are the requirements for legal riding in Vietnam for foreigners?

For foreign riders, legal riding in Vietnam depends on the type of vehicle. Motorbikes or scooters over 50cc require either a Vietnamese driving license or a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention, together with your home country license. Vehicles that do not require a license - such as 50cc scooters and electric bikes under 4kW with a top speed below 50 km/h - can be ridden legally without an IDP convention 1968.

What are the risks of riding illegally in Hoi An or Da Nang?

Riding illegally in Vietnam can lead to serious consequences. You may face heavy fines (around 2–3 million VND), and traffic police can stop you from continuing your trip, forcing you to take a taxi back and arrange bike pickup with the rental company. In the event of an accident, an illegal rider is generally considered at fault by default, even if you believe the other party caused the accident. This can result in significant legal and financial liabilities, especially in serious cases. Insurance policies typically do not cover any incidents involving illegal riding, and these issues can quickly turn a relaxing holiday into a stressful experience.

Can I use my home country license?

No. Vietnam does not recognize foreign driving licenses on their own. To ride motorbikes over 50cc, you must have a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention, together with your home country driving license.

Is an IDP 1949 valid in Vietnam?

No. Vietnam only recognizes the International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention. IDP 1949 is not valid in Vietnam; however, 50cc scooters and low-power electric bikes can be ridden legally without any IDP.

How can I get an IDP 1968?

An IDP under the 1968 Vienna Convention must be obtained in your home country before traveling and cannot be issued after you leave. Not all countries participate in this convention. Travelers from countries such as the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, Ireland... are therefore not eligible to legally ride motorbikes over 50cc in Vietnam.

Is it legal to ride your bikes in Vietnam without an IDP 1968?

Yes. Our 50cc scooters, electric bikes, and pedal-assist bikes are fully legal to ride in Vietnam without an International Driving Permit under the 1968 convention. Vietnam only recognizes the 1968 IDP for larger motorcycles. Vehicles under 50cc and electric bikes do not require a Vietnamese motorbike license or IDP 1968, which makes Hoi An eBike a safe and legal choice for most international travelers.

What types of bikes do you offer?

We offer 50cc scooters, electric bikes, and pedal-assist bikes to suit different riding styles. The 50cc scooters are ideal for couples and longer exploration routes. When we deliver your bike, we usually bring three to four different sizes so you can try them on and choose the two that fit you best for maximum comfort and protection.

Do you provide a phone holder for navigation?

Yes. Every bike comes with a secure phone holder so you can easily use Google Maps or other navigation apps while riding. This makes your journey much more convenient and significantly safer, as you can keep both hands on the handlebars and your eyes focused on the road. Without a phone holder, the passenger often has to hold the phone by hand to check directions, which is uncomfortable, distracting, and takes away from the enjoyment of the ride. With a proper mount, navigation becomes smooth and stress-free, allowing you to fully enjoy the scenery around Hoi An.
